Spitting nails: Netizens upset by bazaar trader's gross act


KOTA KINABALU: "Disgusting" is the word for a recent incident caught on video apparently at a Ramadan bazaar in Labuan, social media users say.

The clip has been widely circulated on WhatsApp and Facebook, among other platforms, showing a trader spitting into a container of food that is being prepared.

A motorist parked near the bazaar is believed to have taken the video before sharing it with friends and family, who forwarded it to a wider audience.

An attached voice message is heard saying vaguely where the incident was recorded, among other details.

Users have called the trader's act gross, appalling, disgusting and dirty.

It is unclear when the incident happened but Sabah Health authorities confirm that it occurred in Labuan.

Sabah Health Department director Datuk Dr Rose Nani Mudin said they were also aware of the video and traced the incident to Labuan.

She said Health officials in all districts in the state did regular checks at Ramadan bazaars.

“Our officials would also take random samples of food to ensure there is no contamination.

"Most of our food handlers comply with proper standard operating procedures and cleanliness in handling food,” she said when contacted on Thursday (April 20).

She said throughout Ramadan so far, Sabah did not see any surge in food poisoning cases.

Labuan Health director Dr Francis Paul said they were still gathering information on the incident.
